Friends of SMBYEG, some of you may have been reading the writing on the wall and we want to make an official announcement about the future of SMBYEG.

SMBYEG_sign-off

Five years ago, we started out as a little piece of something bigger (you may have heard us tell the story about SMBYEG origins as a chapter of an international organization), but from early on we found ourselves shaping our own direction based on our YEG community.

What you may not know is SMBYEG is 100% volunteer run. (Huge shout out and thanks to our event volunteers who slogged groceries and coffee urns up all those stairs, helped chop fruit, clean up, set up chairs, and fill in the gaps for us!) As much as we might make it look easy, a significant investment of time and effort is required behind the scenes to pull off our events. As our organization has continued to flex and grow, we have been unable to establish a sustainable infrastructure model for the long term. As they say, “many hands make light work” – but our committee recruiting efforts over the past year have not yielded the results we have needed to maintain and grow our monthly event.

Recently, our current organizing committee has experienced a lot of personal changes, all at once; relocations, new jobs/careers, changes to current careers, changing life priorities, et cetera, has made meeting the challenges of organizing a regular event very difficult.

As we grew and evolved so did the environment around us. Five years ago we were one of the few regular meetups of this sort, and we hold the honour of being the very first 3rd-party meetup to move-in at Startup Edmonton, and to date remained one of the largest. Edmonton’s startup culture has really exploded to where, now, there are a multitude of events you can attend almost any day of the week!

All that being said, we are announcing that at this time, we are bringing the current SMBYEG chapter to a close. We will hold on to a number of our properties (including all of our regular social channels) for a period of time so there is still access to our past library of content. It is possible that we may re-boot SMBYEG in a different format or transition it to new volunteers in the future, but for now this is the end. Thank you for all of your support!

We’ll be reserving a few tables and buying a few appies to share and to celebrate our time together and to formally set our ship off into the night. We’d love for you to join us at Denizen Hall on Tuesday, May 3rd between 5:30-7:30 pm.

As per usual, tickets to this event are free, but we do ask that you register in advance so we have appropriate space and food available. Please register in advance at smbyeg_signoff.eventbrite.ca.

Lastly, let us say we are so proud of the product we have put out for the past five years. We have truly loved getting to work with our co-organizers, speakers, sponsors, not to mention meeting and learning from each of you. We have achieved some great successes as an organization. In itself, that is a rewarding achievement which we all share.

Thank you for all the great memories,
Your SMBYEG Committee, past and present
